spiral of silence

Campaign season is very much felt nowadays. Never would you see a place where no poster of a politician is around. Also, a new 'trend' in campaigning is now in tv commercials which I think is effective if you really want people to notice (hello? all of us is "lss-ed"(is there such word?haha) from Manny Villar's jingle for the nth time).

But what is it that really makes the cut for us to vote for these people?

qualities that we want:
  • competence
  • experience
  • integrity
  • moral values
  • clean
qualities that ends up winning:
  • popular
  • impossible promises (i.e. "Wala nang magiging mahirap"- some presidentiable)
  • looks "kind"
  • helped some people
  • a relative of some established politician
The question is WHY? Why do end up with these people?

The answer, I think, is the theory called Spiral of Silence.

Spiral of silence is about public opinion. When majority of the people share (or brag) about their thoughts, the minority tends not to share what they have in mind. Instead, they just keep these thoughts to themselves and eventually, they would also have the same mentality as the majority. It's like the minority's opinion is headed to a downward spiral until it's gone.

Fear of isolation is what drives this spiral. Obviously, if there's someone who deviates about something, the majority would find this person to be an outcast or someone who rebels, and thus creating a strain in their relationship.

My advice? Do not debate on which politician should win. Do not justify to people why you want them. My friend said that she wants to vote for Gibo Teodoro, but she thinks he won't win so she would vote for Noynoy Aquino. See? How could a candidate win if you would not vote for him? Just because there are POPULAR choices out there, does not mean that they will be the ones to win! The power is on us, the people. We are the ones that should decide.

I'm not saying that we should not listen to the "populars" but I think we should consider what we REALLY want and not the media/people imposes on us.

We have our own minds.
We have our own opinion.
We are unique.
:D
